Let's Press Start With This Year's Musical
5th and 6th grade students have been preparing for this years musical, Press Start. The show is opening on Wednesday, January 25 and Thursday, January 26 at 6:30pm in the L.P. Quinn cafeteria. The musical is about classic video game characters whose lives are at stake, and need to work together to stay in play. The director, Miss Ryan, is very proud to see how well they are doing. “I think we are doing a really good job so far. There's lots of work going into it so we take it one step by step.” Miss Ryan and Mrs. Dukett (Assistant Director), have to place students in certain roles. They do that by an audition process and they try to place students in a role that fits their personality, where they can show off their strengths.

There are also other people that help make the show: the crew. The different crews include backstage and set crew that are in charge of everything that goes on behind the scenes. Miss Ryan thinks it is a very fun experience because, “We build this whole show from the ground up, and I get to see the students grow throughout the whole production.” Miss Ryan decided to be the Director of the musical because, “It's a challenge for me to work with a big group of students. I couldn't do it without Mrs. Dukett’s help.” Miss Ryan was drawn to this musical because she thought a lot of people would like a show about video games. There are also many good lessons you can learn from the show about friendship, teamwork, and not judging a book by it's cover. Don't miss this year's musical, Press Start!

A New Principal Arrives
This year at L.P. Quinn we have a new principal named Mrs. Aubrey. Her favorite part about being the new principal is meeting all the new students and teachers. Mrs. Aubrey chose to be our principal because, “I knew I could reach more students this way.” Her favorite part about Tupper Lake is how welcoming it is, but she is still getting to know it. Before coming to Tupper Lake Mrs. Aubrey taught fourth grade, kindergarten, and 1st grade at Brushton-Moira. Mrs. Aubrey also went to school at Brushton-Moira. The school she came from is different from L.P. Quinn because, “My school was pre-k through 12th grade and here it is pre-k through 6th grade." She has two children, Jason-24 and Bryan-19. She also has one dog, an English Shepherd named Sonny. Mrs. Aubrey is looking forward to her first year at L.P. Quinn.

The Grinch’s Secret Identity
“My favorite Christmas tradition is watching The Grinch because I am a bit of a Grinch myself.” ~ Mr. Arthur, Track Coach A Christmas Treasure Hunt “My family always does a treasure hunt. One person writes clues and another finds the clues and gets one gift every time they find each one.” ~ Ms. Zehr, 5th Grade Teacher A Christmas Breakfast “I always cook the same breakfast every christmas morning. My grandmother used to cook this for us. It’s like an egg and cheese casserole. I really like it but my children don’t really like it, but I cook it anyway. My memory was when it was my very, very first Christmas when I was older. I was alone and sad without my mom and dad, but my son was 1 and when he saw that Santa was here he was very happy." ~ Mrs. Klossner, 6th Grade Teacher) Don’t Drop a Batch “My memory was when my cousin Ashlyn and my other cousin Colden were baking cookies, and I accidentally dropped a batch and my mom yelled at me. But then it was okay because Ashlyn was there and said that she dropped some before. ~Hayleigh Conlon, 6th Grade student Skiing Savage “I love skiing with my sons and coming home to a fresh batch of Mrs. Savage's cookies after skiing.” ~Mr. Savage, 4th Grade Teacher Christmas With Family “I love to see my family. It is always fun to spend time with my family and Mya’s family because we always have happy times together and we laugh a lot. I also love to buy gifts for everybody. I always love to watch them open the gifts, and I love to surprise everybody. I love to walk my dog on the nature trail in the snow because my dog is so funny in the snow." ~Ms. Shumway, Secretary |
Ice Skating on Christmas
“Every year on Christmas, when there's enough ice, my family and I go skating on a small pond by my house.” ~Miss Jones, OT Sledding with Family “When I was younger my whole family would go sledding and have hot cocoa and cookies. And on Christmas Even we could open one present.” ~Mrs. Dukett, Librarian Crumb Cake in the Morning “On Christmas Eve I would open one present. I would eat crumb cake every Christmas morning for breakfast.” ~Rachel Sorenson, 5th grade student Caroling around Town “One of my Christmas memories was going caroling around town. All the kids would get together and go caroling and at the end we would drink hot cocoa.” ~Mrs. Shaheen, 2nd Grade Teacher A Christmas Movie After Sledding “When I was a kid my family and I would go to my grandma's. We would go sledding down a big hill. Then we would go back to grandma's house and have lots of good food. All the kids and adults would go in the living room and watch a Christmas movie.” ~Miss. Guiney, 3rd Grade Teacher |
Wild At The Wild Center
Miss Summers' 1st grade class and Mrs. Boudreau’s and Miss Manhard's 6th grade class join together and go to The Wild Center. They got the idea from Miss Summers and Miss Manhard who thought it would be fun. The first and sixth graders go once a month to explore The Wild Center and complete activities. While at The Wild Center they like to make pictures and look at the animals. First grader, Ian Baldwin, states, “I like the disco ball because it makes music.” Similarly, Lyla Robillard states that, “I like The Wild Center because I like looking at the animals. I like the otters because they do flips.” The kids especially love to do fun activities with their partners. Ian states that, “My favorite activity to do is make pictures, because you can make them look like a minion.” At The Wild Center the kids have to pair up with partners. Ian states that, “I like working with partners because you get to go places like the statue of the coyote.” Lyla likes exploring The Wild Center because, “I like the pines playground because I like playing there.” The kids really like exploring new things at The Wild Center. Not only do the kids like The Wild Center, but the teachers like it too. Miss Summers states that she likes The Wild Center because, “I like working with the kids inside and out. I like the pines playground because of the natural feel."
|
Miss Summers thinks the first grader and the sixth graders work well together. She states, “They work very well together. They like watching the 6th graders; it brings out their personality”. While exploring The Wild Center, the first and sixth graders work on projects in pairs. Miss Summers states the reason why she puts them in pairs is because, “It helps level out their skills, personalities and interactions”. Miss Summers states, “I like watching the two grades work together. The sixth graders teach the first graders things, without me teaching it”. Mrs. Boudreau, Miss Manhard and Miss Summers think that it is a successful Wild Center program with the first and sixth graders, and that they recommend doing it.

Ask Tip Toe the Elf
Dear Tiptoe,
My friend has been ignoring me. I don’t know why but she started ignoring me when this new girl came to school. She has been hanging out with her a lot and I feel left out. I don’t know if I did something wrong or if she doesn't want to be my friend anymore. What can I do to get my friend back? Sincerely, Left out Laurie Dear Left out Laurie, I think you should write a note asking what you did wrong or tell her how you feel. Maybe you can make friend with the new girl too! Try talking to your parents or an adult you trust. Sincerely, Tiptoe the Elf Dear Tiptoe, My cousin’s dog ran away last week and he won’t talk to me about it. I have tried to bring it up by talking about dogs, but he went to his room and slammed the door. He told me never to talk to him again. I went home crying that day because I was so sad. Please help. I don’t know what to do! Sincerely, Confused Conner Dear Confused Conner, It is wonderful that you want to help your cousin, but it may take some time before he is ready to talk about it. He may want to keep his mind off it. You could invite him to your house to play a game, or ask him to go sledding. Just whatever you do, keep off the topic of dogs. About him saying to never talk to him, don’t take it too offensively. He was probably just really mad. Sincerely, Tiptoe the Elf |
Dear Tiptoe,
There is a group really mean girls in the grade above me and they go on my bus. They are always making jokes about me and other people in school. Last week they even broke my glasses! My mom called their parents but they won’t stop. Please give me some advice! Sincerely, Joked about Janice Dear Joked about Janice, I’m sorry you are being bullied. Maybe your mom could talk to the bus garage so they could keep an eye on those girls. You could also talk to the school counselor. If you talk to your mom, you could come up with a plan to stay away from the girls. I hope that my advice helps the bullying stop. Sincerely, Tiptoe the Elf Dear Tiptoe, I love to ski, sled, skate, and play outside in the snow. But I broke my leg and have crutches. What will I do when all my friends and family are outside playing, or if we go outside at school? Sincerely, Broken Bonnie Dear Broken Bonnie, It’s great that you like to play outside but there are lots of other things to do in the winter. You could do some crafts, listen to music, bake, or maybe play with a friend! If you talk to your parents you could see if you could participate in an after school activity. Try to find something that you are interested in or a fun hobby. Whatever you do, I hope you have lots of fun doing it. Sincerely, Tiptoe the Elf |
Saving Children Around the World
The 6th grade raised hundreds of dollars for UNICEF. As we talk more to Mrs. Boudreau, she explains the 6th grade's total raised was $617 which is enough for a village water pump. UNICEF is a program that helps kids around the world who have a more challenging life. She believes it’s a really important organization because it helps children around the world in need. Our goal was to raise $5 per person, which would be about $250, but the 6th grade went above and beyond. Mrs. Boudreau said, “They did a nice job individually raising money.” The 6th grade also did a good job rolling and counting change. Mrs. Boudreau received an email about the program and thought it was a good idea because of the hurricane that had just hit Haiti.

They Rock Winter and Spring
Each year the fourth, fifth and sixth grade band and chorus students hold a concert in the winter and the spring. Mrs. Davidson and Miss Ryan are the ones who plan the whole event. The next 5th and 6th grade spring concert is on Tuesday June 13th and the 4th grade spring concert is Thursday June 15th.
Mrs. Davidson is the band teacher and loves giving children a chance to try new instruments and let them have a chance to love it as much as she does. She wanted to teach band because she likes band, kids, teaching and she likes helping people. She was in chorus and band because her parents recommended it and when she joined, she started to love it. Her dream was to be a band teacher because she really wanted to go to work every morning doing something she loved. She has also taught general music before for grades K-6 and she liked it, but not as much as band! |
