Read and Explore S’more Books
The Book Fair was in business once again! On March 1st-3rd it returned to our school. Scholastic sends all the materials, along with the thousands of books every year for everyone to enjoy. The teachers and parents from the community usually help set up the L.P. Quinn Book Fair every year. Children around the elementary school find Star Wars, Lego books, and books that come with something extra, which are the favorites. In the end, the LPQers get Scholastic dollars or cash to buy books for students or new teachers. They can also contribute to the purchase of recorders for music class and t-shirts for L.P. Quinn events. Scholastic Book Fairs are great for the L.P. Quinn school along with the whole community, with more years to come!

Steaming Hot Talent
Miss Ryan looked forward to doing the Coffee House program this year. It was held April 5, 2017. Miss Ryan does the program year after year, and she feels very giddy, excited, nervous, and terrified all at the same time. Miss Ryan got the inspiration for the fifth and sixth grade students from the Tupper Lake’s Got Talent program, however there is no incentive to win. She put a spin on it because students have the chance to get out there to show off their talent and be unique without having to worry about being declined. She also said that her favorite part of Coffee House is the night of the show because there is a lot of excitement. Miss Ryan started singing when she was only two years old, mostly because her grandmother would sing to her as a child. Miss Ryan says, “I try to organize the acts of talent separately, to make it more fun!” This was her fifth year doing the Coffee House, and is planning on more years to come!

Spelling Bee Comes Buzzing In
The 15th year of the Tupper Lake Spelling Bee arrived! On February first, at 6:30 pm, the event was held in the L.P. Quinn cafeteria. According to Mrs. Lewis, the words start out easy and small, and the more it progresses the harder the words will get. The amount of words there are depend on how many words the third graders can spell. A group of teachers got together and developed the word list many years ago and the list is edited every year. The kids do not have the chance to study the words before the event. Mrs. Lewis stated, “This year we have 37 students competing. Usually every other year the number of students is also in the 30’s.” There will be prizes for the three winners. The prizes are:
1st place received: A $50 Amazon gift card. 2nd place received: A $35 Amazon gift card. 3rd place received: A $25 Amazon gift card. The third grade Spelling Bee is a great opportunity to test your spelling skills and a great way to increase your sportsmanship. -Jamin Whitmore & Ravyn Sotomayor |
Students Mixing Athletics and Reading Together
Ever wonder why those “big kids” from the high school were invading classrooms and the cafeteria? Well, the high school athletes came to L.P. Quinn to read to the students. The SMART Program stands for Students Mixing Athletics and Reading Together. Miss Manhard, a teacher and coach, and Mr. Cook, the athletic director, are in charge of the program because they both have experience with high school sports. The program started in October of 2016 with sixth grade students and continued with fifth grade. The goal is to eventually have the athletes meet with every grade and continue for years to come. Miss Manhard said, “My high school had a similar program to this one, and we wanted to connect the high school to the L.P. Quinn.” Varsity athletes from each sport came to L.P. Quinn to read and talk to the kids about sports and school. Also, they talked about the lesson in the story they read and how important school is in life and in sports. After reading, the SMART Program athletes ate lunch with the students to interact and encourage attendance and participation in extracurricular activities. This program seems like a SMART idea! -L.P. Writing To A Soldier
Mrs. Dukette’s first grade class has been writing letters to her husband in the military. They are writing these letters because she wanted to give them an idea of how real life communication works. She also wants them to learn the difference between asking and telling.
Mrs. Dukette’s husband is deployed near Dubai, and the letters take about two weeks to arrive. Mr. Dukette’s favorite part about receiving the letters is that they are funny. He loves getting the mail and looking at the little pictures they draw. He has received letters from the students three times already this year. The kids ask Mr. Dukette questions like “What do you do for fun?” or “Do you miss your kids?” Before Mrs. Dukette sends out the letters she reads them and loves how thoughtful and caring the students are. We are very proud of the first grade class!

Ask Cupid
Dear Cupid,
The other day I took my dog for a walk and I overheard my friend talking to the mean girl and she said that I am a total loser and that she is pretending to be my friend. I do not understand why? We have been friends for a really long time. What should I do? Sincerely, Betrayed Betty Dear Betrayed Betty, I understand that you are confused but you two should sit down and talk about this situation. Maybe you will understand why she said that. Maybe she did it for a reason. Sincerely, Cupid |
Dear Cupid,
Everyday for lunch, I have been bringing healthy food like spinach, broccoli, peppers and squash. My friends do not want to sit next to me because of it. I tried to tell them that my mom has been making me bring the healthy food but they won’t listen. I don’t understand why they won’t believe me? I understand my mom wants me to be healthy but why all the time? Sincerely, Misunderstood Mary Dear Misunderstood Mary, I think your mom is worried about your health. Maybe she is worried and took it too far. On the other hand about your friends, I just think they're messing with you. Maybe it was all just a big joke. You should all just have a talk about it. You should probably tell your mom she has taken it too far and ask her to decrease the healthy food. Maybe your mom and your friends will understand how you feel. Sincerely, Cupid |
Dear Cupid,
Today I asked my friend to come over while my parents were still at work. They normally go to work at 8 am and get done at 9 pm. Well, we were outside playing basketball and the big bullies started laughing at us so we decided to go inside and play Wii. As we were playing I accidentally let go of the Wii remote when we were playing the bowling game, and it hit the tv, which cracked. I am terrified and do not know what to do? Sincerely, Worried Wilson Dear Worried Wilson, I think you should tell the truth about what really happened. Tell your parents that when you were playing Wii you accidentally let go of the remote and it hit the tv. About the bullies, I think you should just ignore them and leave when they start to bully you. They might just leave you alone and never come back, or they will try to get you to listen and keep bothering you. I think the best solution is to ignore them and leave when they start walking up to you. Sincerely, Cupid |
Read to Receive
For the third year, the L.P. Quinn Elementary school students, Kindergarten through sixth grade, were encouraged to participate in the Six Flags Reading Challenge. Their objective is to read a total of 6 hours or 360 minutes. The reading challenge is optional for all students, and as Mrs. Dukett states, “The Reading Challenge is to encourage reading for enjoyment and fun.” Every year Mrs. Dukett and Mrs. Bourgeois organize the challenge. It started on January 10th and ended on February 28th. Students kept track of the minutes they read on the paper provided. Mrs. Dukett and Mrs.Bourgeois add up all the minutes when it is handed in. If on time, the students who chose to participate are rewarded with a free ticket for The Great Escape. Mrs. Dukett said, “We keep records of the minutes, and we take the information and put it online. If you hand it in late you can’t receive one.” Many other schools participate in the reading challenges around the country. The Great Escape is a great reward for reading.

Donating is Good for the "Sole"
Our nurse, Mrs. McClain, loves kids and loves to help others. Mrs. McClain states, “I love to be able to know that I made a difference by helping people to just make them feel better.” The nurse likes L.P. Quinn because everybody is so kind and helps each other, so she came up with the Shoe Drive because she realized that kids needed shoes. Some shoes were falling apart, so she decided it was a good idea to have extra shoes for the ones that needed them. She was inspired to do the Shoe Drive because she witnessed another school do it. Mrs. McClain made the decision and decided to bring the Shoe Drive to our school. The school started collecting shoes at the end of September and finished collecting in October. She thinks they will start another drive in the future when it is necessary.
